Heartland Sock Pattern

I named this sock after a heartland shawl pattern found in a folk shawl book I have.

If you want to see which book it is here is the link to the one found at Amazon.com:

This is the second sock I made based of patterns I found in this book.

This sock is made by combining 2 very fine wool yarns. I like how the lacy ribbed turned out on this sock, I may have to consider doing an entire sock with just the lacy rib.

This is a 72 stitch sock pattern, so for me that means using a fine sock yarn and 2mm (size 0-1) DP needles.

So here is the pattern:

Cast on 36 stitches using a figure 8 cast-on:
Knit 18 on needle one, 9 on needle 2 and 3:

Row 1:
Needle 1: k1, m1 (knit in front loop and back loop of next stitch), knit to last two stitches, m1, k1
Needle 2: k1, m1, knit to end
Needle 3: Knit to last two stitches, m1, k1

Row 2: Knit aroundRepeat these two rows until you have 72 stitches.

Do the Heartland pattern on needle one, and knit on needles 2 and 3 until you have the desired foot length.

Heartland pattern:
Row 1: *yo, ssk, k4* repeat
All even rows: knit around
Row 3: *k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo* repeat
Row 5: *k2, yo, (s1, k2tog, psso), yo, k1* repeat
Row 7 and 9: *k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk* repeat

When you are ready to work the heel, turn after finishing on needle 3:

To form the short row heel:

working on needles two and three

slip 1, P34, turn
slip 1, K33, turn
slip 1, P32, turn
Continue in this manner until you reach slip 1, K17, turn
slip 1, Purl to stitch before a gap, P2tog,pick up a stitch before the next stitch (this stitch is on the right needle), turn

slip 1, Knit to stitch before a gap, K2tog,pick up a stitch before the next stitch (this stitch is on the right needle), turn

Continue in this manner until all the stitches are work.

To continue with the leg, work the pattern stitch on all three needles, repeat until you have the desire length.

Lacy rib:
Row 1 and 2: *k3, p3* around
Row 3:*yo, (s1, k2tog, psso), yo, p3* around
Repeat these 3 rows for desired rib length ending with row 1.

Bind off using SC method:
With a crochet hook small enough to knit with:
K1,* k1, YO and draw through 2 loops* twice. [*P1 YO and draw through 2 loops* 3 times,* k1, YO and draw through 2 loops* 3 times] repeat until the last three end with *k1, YO and draw through 2 loops* three times, finish off.
